Gained her health and a healthy baby...

Ayşe Yağcı who underwent an urgent cholesistectomy during her pregnancy gained her health and a healthy baby.

While preparing to welcome her second child our patient underwent an urgent cholesistectomy because of bile stones. Now she has delivered a healthy baby and gained her health again.

Let us listen to what she has to say:

“My first baby was delivered through c-section in 2001. My first pregnancy went well. I experienced nausea from the first moment I knew I was pregnant again. Because of my reflux anamnesis we thought it was reflux again and with the order of my doctor I changed my eating habits in order to get rid of this complaint. When I was 26-27 weeks pregnant I experienced incredible pain, in the epigastric area and back. The pain decreased with vomiting but it kept me awake till the next morning. I went to work the next day, as if nothing has happened the night before…After a couple of days the same pain aroused again, this time it increased more and more . Because I had a c-section I did not know how labor pain was experienced so we went to the hospital to get an examination whether I was in labor or not. The doctor performed an ultrasound and told me that there was a problem with my gallbladder and a specialist should do another examination. I was given some medication and sent home. The next day we came to see the specialist and after an examination I was told I had bile stones and my gallbladder was enlarged. We did not quite understand the doctor and thought that just taking some medicine would clear the problem until he told us that my gallbladder had to be removed. I was pregnant and had a 6 years old daughter waiting at home and I was scared so I denied the therapy. I was hospitalized to observe the gallbladder and given IV fluids and painkiller. I stayed 3 days in the hospital, my obstetrician Dr. Yasemin Yakut ensured me that everything was ok but unfortunately the bladder did not shrink I just felt better. So I was discharged with a strict diet and called in one week later. I stuck to the diet or so I thought but just one week later the incredible pain aroused again and the nightmare begun. Because of my latest stay I knew I was reaching the point where I had to undergo an operation and I was scared. Who knows either it was my fear or the pains rise I could not stand it anymore I just wanted it to have an end. After an emergency ultrasound my doctor told me that neither IV fluids nor medicine could made the gallbladder shrink and I had to operated immediately or the bladder would explode. He told me that because I had a 28 weeks pregnancy that he would perform the operation by laparoscopy and the operation time would be very short. If however the baby was born, there would hopefully be no problem. My attending obstetrician Dr. Yasemin Yakut assured me that everything was going to be fine and I gave in. I was taken to the OR immediately and everything went so fast that the only thing I remember was a calm voice telling me that everything was over and o.k., the baby was fine and me gallbladder was removed. The voice was so calming that it swept away all my fears. It was over.”

Gallbladder stones often occur in pregnancies. It is the second non-obstetrical reason coming after appendicitis for operations during pregnancy. Bile stones occur 2.5 times more often in women. The metabolic and hormonal changes during pregnancy play a role in the rate of bile stones in pregnancies. While pregnancy bile stones mostly are sometimes they show different clinical symptoms.
  • Intolerance to oily food
  • Epigastric right upper quadrant pain
  • Dyspeptic complaints
  • Vomiting-nausea

Having above mentioned symptoms a pregnant patient should be examined for hepatitis, ulcer, MI, preeclampsia and HELLP Syndrome. After listening to the complaints of the patient and eliminating obstetric reasons a surgeon should be consulted. After Dr. Levent Eminoğlu preformed the laparoscopic cholesistectomy everyone was relieved. The surgery went well and the baby was fine.

Having the baby delivered at the estimated date swept away all concerns and made the family and whole team happy.
